RoRo & MAFI Shipping
RoRo and MAFI shipping solutions for wheeled, static, oversized and project cargo, managed from collection through to destination
RoRo Shipping for Specialist Cargo
DC Global Freight provides RoRo shipping solutions for machinery, vehicles, industrial equipment and project cargo moving between the UK and international destinations.
While RoRo services are commonly associated with vehicles and self-propelled machinery, they can also provide an effective solution for static and non-wheeled cargo loaded onto MAFI trailers.
This can be particularly valuable for heavy or oversized cargo where conventional container equipment is unsuitable and regular breakbulk sailings are limited or unavailable.
Our project team assesses the cargo, dimensions, weight, routing and handling requirements before determining whether RoRo, MAFI, flat rack, breakbulk or another specialist shipping solution is most appropriate.
What We
Handle
• Construction and mining machinery
• Agricultural equipment
• Trucks, trailers and commercial vehicles
• Self-propelled machinery
• Static machinery and industrial equipment
• Cargo loaded onto MAFI trailers
• Heavy and oversized equipment
• Offshore and energy-sector cargo
• Project and specialist cargo
Our
Approach
Every RoRo shipment starts with an assessment of the cargo, dimensions, weight, mobility, lifting requirements, origin, destination and available vessel services.
For self-propelled equipment, we assess the appropriate RoRo service and port requirements. For static cargo, we can investigate loading onto a suitable MAFI or roll trailer, allowing cargo that cannot drive onto the vessel to utilise RoRo services where appropriate.
We coordinate collection, port delivery, equipment requirements, export documentation, vessel booking, cargo handling and destination arrangements, providing a single point of contact throughout the movement.

Static Cargo by MAFI Trailer
Not all cargo shipped on a RoRo vessel needs to be self-propelled.
Heavy machinery, industrial equipment and other static cargo can, where suitable, be positioned and secured onto a MAFI or roll trailer for movement aboard a RoRo vessel.
This can provide an effective alternative for cargo that cannot be loaded into standard containers or where suitable conventional breakbulk sailings are not available from the required origin.
DC Global Freight can assess:
• Cargo dimensions and weight
• MAFI trailer requirements
• Loading and securing arrangements
• Port handling requirements
• RoRo vessel and route availability
• Origin and destination transport
• Specialist lifting where required
The suitability of a MAFI solution depends on the individual cargo, vessel, port infrastructure and available service, so we recommend involving our project team at an early stage.
Case Study
Deep Panuke Offshore Decommissioning Project – Canada to UK
01
Self-Propelled & Wheeled Cargo
RoRo services can provide an efficient solution for construction machinery, agricultural equipment, trucks, trailers, commercial vehicles and other cargo capable of being driven or towed aboard the vessel.
02
Static Cargo on MAFI
For non-wheeled machinery and industrial cargo, a MAFI trailer can provide the rolling platform required to move the cargo on and off a suitable RoRo vessel.
This can open up scheduled RoRo services to cargo that might otherwise require a breakbulk or specialist vessel solution.
03
Oversized & Project Cargo
Where cargo is particularly heavy, wide, high or otherwise complex, our project team assesses the available RoRo, MAFI, flat rack, breakbulk and charter options to determine an appropriate transport solution.
Choosing the Right Shipping Method
There is no single shipping method suitable for every oversized or specialist shipment.
Depending on the cargo and route, DC Global Freight may consider:
RoRo / MAFI – for wheeled machinery or static cargo suitable for movement on a roll trailer.
Flat Rack / Open Top – for oversized cargo that can move within container shipping networks.
Breakbulk – for cargo loaded individually onto a suitable vessel.
Heavy Lift – where specialist lifting, transport or handling is required.
Vessel Charter – for large projects, exceptional cargo or movements where scheduled services are unsuitable.
Our role is to assess the shipment and identify the practical solution rather than force the cargo into a particular transport method.

FAQs
What is RoRo shipping?
RoRo, or Roll-on/Roll-off shipping, uses vessels designed for cargo that can be driven, towed or moved aboard on wheeled equipment. It is commonly used for vehicles, construction machinery, trucks, trailers and specialist project cargo.
Can static cargo be shipped on a RoRo vessel?
Yes. Static machinery and industrial equipment can sometimes be loaded and secured onto a MAFI or roll trailer, allowing it to move aboard a suitable RoRo vessel. Suitability depends on the cargo dimensions, weight, route and vessel requirements.
What is a MAFI trailer?
A MAFI trailer is a heavy-duty wheeled platform used for moving static, heavy and oversized cargo aboard RoRo vessels. Cargo is positioned and secured onto the trailer before being moved onto and off the vessel using specialist terminal equipment.
Is RoRo cheaper than breakbulk shipping?
The most cost-effective method depends on the cargo, route, vessel availability and handling requirements. Where suitable scheduled RoRo services exist, MAFI shipping can provide an effective alternative to conventional breakbulk, but each shipment should be assessed individually.
